{"id":5371484,"date":"2022-10-28T18:15:21","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T18:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.life.com\/?p=5371484"},"modified":"2022-10-31T16:32:36","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T16:32:36","slug":"sleepy-hollow-then-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.life.com\/history\/sleepy-hollow-then-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Sleepy Hollow: Then &amp; Now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seventy-eight years ago this week, LIFE published photographer Nina Leen&#8217;s first full-length photo essay: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=DUIEAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA15&amp;dq=Nina+Leen+Washington+Irving&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjO8Z3FsO_6AhXFEFkFHcHHChYQ6AF6BAgLEAI#v=onepage&amp;q=Nina%20Leen%20Washington%20Irving&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The World of Washington Irving.&#8221;<\/a> Now largely remembered for stories on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.life.com\/lifestyle\/halloween-special-photos-from-the-haunts-of-famous-american-ghosts\/\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s ghosts<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.life.com\/history\/when-life-revisited-the-sites-of-the-salem-witch-trials\/\">Salem witch trials<\/a> (among hundreds of other assignments for the magazine), Leen spent part of her early career documenting sites associated with one of the most popular legend writers in US history, Washington Irving. To celebrate the release of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/World-Washington-Irving-Wyck-Brooks\/dp\/B0007FEYJ6\" target=\"_blank\">a new book <\/a>at the time by the same title, Leen set out to explore those Hudson River Valley and Catskill sites, including Sleepy Hollow, that reflected Irving&#8217;s life and tales.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can still visit many of the sites that both Irving and Leen walked to this day. On his journey he passed many sites pertaining to Dutch folklore and Indigenous tales that were haunted by sailors and shipwrecks.
